Un poema debe ser palpable y silencioso

como fruta redonda.

Mudo 

como viejo medallones al tacto.

Silencioso como la piedra de la moldura de la ventana

gastada por el roce de la manga, donde el moho ha

crecido.

Un poema debe ser sin palabras,

como el vuelo de los pájaros.

Un poema debe ser inmóvil en el tiempo,

mientras la luna asciende.

Dejando, mientras la luna libera

ramita por ramita la enmarañada noche de los árboles.

Dejando, como deja la luna detrás el

invierno, 

memoria tras memoria en el recuerdo.

Un poema deser inmóvil en el tiempo,

mientras la luna asciende.

Un poema debe ser semejante a:

no verdad.

Para la historia del dolor, 

una entrada vacía y una hoja de arce.

Para el amor,

los pastos inclinados y las dos luces

sobre el mar.

Un poema no debe significar, 

sino ser.

A poem should be palpable and mute   

As a globed fruit,

Dumb

As old medallions to the thumb,

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone

Of casement ledges where the moss has grown—

A poem should be wordless   

As the flight of birds.

A poem should be motionless in time   

As the moon climbs,

Leaving, as the moon releases

Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,   

Memory by memory the mind—

A poem should be motionless in time   

As the moon climbs.

A poem should be equal to:

Not true.

For all the history of grief

An empty doorway and a maple leaf.

For love

The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea—

A poem should not mean   

But be.
