CANCIÓN PARA BILLIE HOLIDAY

¿CÓMO aliviar a mi corazón

     De la canción

     Y de la tristeza?

¿Cómo aliviar a mi corazón

     Sino con la canción

     De la tristeza?

¿Cómo aliviar a mi corazón

     De la tristeza

     De la canción?

No me habléis de la pena

Empolvada en su pelo,

O el polvillo en los ojos

Que al azar sopló el viento.

La pena de la que hablo

La empolva el desconsuelo.

Trompeta con sordina,

Aire caliente y frío cobre.

Amarga televisión enturbiada

Por un sonido que oscila…

      ¿Dónde?

DON´T EXPLAIN

SONG FOR BILLIE HOLIDAY

WHAT can purge my heart

    Of the song

    And the sadness?

What can purge my heart

    But the song

    Of the sadness?

What can purge my heart

    Of the sadness

    Of the song?

Do not speak of sorrow

With dust in her hair,

Or bits of dust in eyes

A chance wind blows there.

The sorrow that I speak of

Is dusted with despair.

Voice of muted trumpet,

Cold brass in warm air.

Bitter television blurred

By sound that simmers-

    Where?

EL NEGRO HABLA DE RÍOS

He conocido ríos...

He conocido ríos:

The Negro Speaks of Rivers

I've known rivers...
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow
of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.

I heard the singing of the Mississippi when
Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans,
And I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I've known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

CORAZÓN ROTO AMERICANO

Yo soy el corazón roto americano

La roca sobre la cual la Libertad

apoya la punta de sus pies-

La gran equivocación

que Jamestown cometió

hace ya tanto tiempo.

YO TAMBIÉN

Yo también canto, América.
Soy el hermano oscuro.
Me hacen comer en la cocina
Cuando llegan visitas.
Pero me río,
Y como bien,
Y me pongo fuerte.
Mañana
Me sentaré a la mesa
Cuando lleguen visitas.
Nadie se animará
A decirme
"Vete a la cocina"
Entonces.
Además, verán lo hermoso que soy
Y tendrán vergüenza,-
Yo, también, soy América.

I, Too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

I, too, am America.

SOY UN NEGRO
Soy un negro:
negro como es negra la noche,
negro como los abismos de mi África.

He sido esclavo:
César me ordenó tener limpias sus escalinatas.
Cepillé las botas de Washington.

He sido obrero:
Las pirámides se levantaron bajo mis manos.
Preparé la argamasa para el Edificio Woolworth.

He sido cantor:
Todo el trayecto de África a Georgia
traje mis canciones de pesar.
Compuse jazz.

He sido víctima:

NEGRO
I am a Negro:
Black as the night is black,
Black like the depths of my Africa.

I’ve been a slave:
Caesar told me to keep his door-steps clean.
I brushed the boots of Washington.

I’ve been a worker:
Under my hand the pyramids arose.
I made mortar for the Woolworth Building.

I’ve been a singer:
All the way from Africa to Georgia
I carried my sorrow songs.
I made ragtime.

I’ve been a victim:
The Belgians cut off my hands in the Congo.
They lynch me still in Mississippi.

I am a Negro:
Black as the night is black,
Black like the depths of my Africa.

DREAMS

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

MOTHER TO SON
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor –
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now –
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

Pelados.
Pero en ningún momento
He dejado de subirla,
No te quedes abajo
Porque descubras que es difícil el ascenso.
No decaigas ahora-
