NO DEJO QUE LA CARIDAD
No dejo que la caridad
confunda mi alma con imágenes
de águila y antílope;
no soy, por mi carácter, nada de eso.
Siendo humana, he nacido en soledad;
Por ser mujer, me persiguen rudamente;
Vivo exprimiendo de una piedra
el pequeño alimento que me gano.
Con máscaras adustas y violentas
pasan los años, en una sola fila;
Pero ninguno mereció mi miedo
y ninguno ha escapado a mi sonrisa.
Now let no charitable hope
Now let no charitable hope
Confuse my mind with images
Of eagle and of antelope:
I am by nature none of these.
I was, being human, born alone;
I am, being woman, hard beset;
I live by squeezing from a stone
What little nourishment I get.
In masks outrageous and austere
The years go by in single file;
But none has merited my fear,
And none has quite escaped my smile.
Confuse my mind with images
Of eagle and of antelope:
I am by nature none of these.
I was, being human, born alone;
I am, being woman, hard beset;
I live by squeezing from a stone
What little nourishment I get.
In masks outrageous and austere
The years go by in single file;
But none has merited my fear,
And none has quite escaped my smile.
